Are These the 10 Best Canadian Films of All Time?

The results of the highly unscientific Maple Leaf Movies poll are in. Admittedly, mistakes were made in the process, some of them glaringly so. Despite that, I hope this list might give one or two people the names of new movies to experience, and it would be great if this were to help stimulate conversation about Canadian film. We make some fantastic movies here, in all genres, and I have to say that I'm happy with the results in that I think that each film on the list is worthy of being there. Denys Arcand has three films here including the number one spot; does that make him Canada's best filmmaker?

With a 36% vote:

1. Le déclin de l'empire américain (The Decline of the American Empire)
(1986) Dir: Denys Arcand)

The next three films tied with a 30% vote each, and are therefore listed alphabetically:

2. Goin’ Down the Road
(1970) Dir: Donald Shebib

3. Les invasions barbares (The Barbarian Invasions)
(2003) Dir: Denys Arcand

4. The Red Violin
(1998) Dir: François Girard

The next two films received a 26% vote:

5. Away from Her
(2006) Dir: Sarah Polley

6. The Hanging Garden
(1997) Dir: Thom Fitzgerald

The last four films received a 23% vote each:

7. The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz
(1974) Dir: Ted Kotcheff

8. Jésus de Montréal (Jesus of Montreal) (1989) Dir: Denys Arcand

9. Léolo
(1992) Dir: Jean-Claude Lauzon

10. Videodrome
(1983) Dir: David Cronenberg
